American Red Cross at Cal members,
Here is an additional update about World Water Week. Clubs the campus over are participating in the effort, so there are numerous events that you can attend! Keep in mind that the only event that you can get hours for American Red Cross @ Cal for is the one on Thursday, March 15th though! Does Sunday night mean you have little time but still want to know what's going on? Scroll down for quick summaries of the events!

UPDATES:
World Water Week Week of March 12th-March 17th (This upcoming week!)
______________________________________________________________________________
World Water Week
Cal Service Network, a network of service groups on campus, is hosting a series of collaborative events the week of March 12th for World Water Week. World Water Week is a United Nations sponsored project ( http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/ ) aimed at focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources, and the student groups at UC Berkeley use the week of March 12th to host their own events supporting the theme of "Food and Water Security." Already, we have student groups making water pasteurization indicators, holding info sessions, and performances, all throughout the week. If your group is interested in hosting any type of even or collaborating on an event, please email Michelle Carney at michelle.carney@berkeley.edu. This is a great way to promote awareness of a global issue, but also to showcase your own group! Any event is welcome!

An overall question for the week to be thinking about:
"What role do Cal students play in promoting clean water around the world? What is the role in the class room and out of the classroom (research, daily life, etc)? How do our choices about water effect the world around us and abroad?"

Here are some events we have so far:

MONDAY (3/12)- Rotaract - WAPI MAKING - Time: 7-9pm, Location: Unit 3 APR (https://www.facebook.com/events/279807235424541/ )

Come join Rotaract's International Committee and Unit 3 Southside Hall Association in this fun and meaningful event where we will be making WAPIs (Water Pasteurization Indicators)! WAPIs are simple, reusable, low cost devices containing a special soy wax that helps users determine when water has reached pasteurization temperatures, when disease-causing organisms in water and milk are killed. We will be sending these WAPIs to the people who need them in less developed countries where access to constant clean water supply is limited. We will be making these devices with our own hands so don't miss out on this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many others!

This event is open to all students so feel free to bring your friends!

WEDNESDAY (3/14) - Circle K - Pledge Session- Time: 7pm, Location: Dwinelle
Next Wednesday at 7pm at their Projects Committee Meeting (room in dwinelle varies) will be having a pledge session to not buy any liquids in bottle form for a month. The money that would have otherwise been spent on these drinks would be donated to a charity that could help with the water crisis around the world. Members will also be learning about the importance of water and some other fun facts!

THURSDAY (3/15) - American Red Cross / ULAP - Info Sesh and Performance - Time: 7:30pm, Location: Dwinelle 079
Come join ARC@Cal's International Committee and Universal Love and Peace this Thursday at 7:30pm in Dwinelle 079 for an exciting performance and informative discussion on the topic of Food and Water Security, and how you can help!

SATURDAY (3/17)- Baking for Circle K Ace of Cakes - Time 2:30 pm, Location: Unit 2 Wada
Also, ARC@Cal will be competing in Circle K's ACE OF CAKES! We will be baking at Salman and Milap's apt at around 2:30pm in Unit 2 Wada on Saturday (3/17) , and that night at 7pm in the Tan Oak Room.  If you're interested in baking with us, email Michelle at michelle.carney@gmail.com! You can also attend and vote for us that night Smiley

SATURDAY (3/17)- Circle K Ace of Cakes - Time: 7-9pm, Location: Tan Oak Room
What is Ace of Cakes for Charity?
For those who do not know what Ace of Cakes is, it is a reality cake-baking competition. Our event will feature clubs from all across campus competing in a cake-baking competition. Participating clubs will bring the cakes on-site on the day of the event to be voted for by event attendees. Moreover, each competing club will be given a period of time to talk about their respective organizations in the interest of publicizing for their club or cause.

There will be judges, but the final winner will ultimately be decided by the club that collects the most votes from attendees. The event will be open to all Berkeley students.

What is the grand prize?
There will be an early entrance/registration fee of $15 for each participating club. However, after March 12, there will be a late registration fee of $18. The money from all club entrance fees will be entered into a pot, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will win an amount of this pot, proportionate to their place. Each winning club can then donate the money to whatever cause they want or can utilize the money for personal club purpose.

Even though the competition is free for all to attend, an attendee must pay $4 in order to place two votes and participate in the activities, such as cupcake decorating, and more! In the end, all profit put towards voting will go to the three charities we stated above.
