A Woman’s Struggle: The Use of Aggression for Survival or Retaliation
What would cause women who have previously experienced sexual violence to join armed groups and become involved in community violence? Gender violence is an ever-growing problem in underprivileged nations, including Haiti. Drawing on in-depth interviews and observation, this program will explore the interplay between gender and women’s violence and ultimately, the extent to which female aggression, committed in a context of armed violence, should be interpreted as a survival strategy or a deliberate choice for retaliation.

Speaker: Benedetta Faedi Duramy is an associate professor at Golden Gate University School of Law. She holds degrees in law and political science from the University of Rome, University of Florence, London School of Economics, and Stanford University. She has received awards for her extensive research and scholarship on gender-based violence, with a special focus on Haiti, where she lived for one year to conduct research.

The event is free, but space is limited. Please RSVP by emailing rkatz@berkeley.edu.
